vidscroll0.3.3

Check your video

Drop in a video to see whether it scrubs smoothly, how it seeks on your device, and how to prepare it.

What it checks

  • Keyframes. It reads the position of every keyframe from the file, the same way vidscroll does when it loads a video, and draws them on the strip. vidscroll uses a file as it is when keyframes are at most 0.5 s apart, and re-encodes it otherwise. See Why seeking stutters.
  • Seeking on this device. It jumps to 20 points in the video and times each jump. The median tells you how many new frames scrolling can show per second. Try it on a phone too: phones seek more slowly than laptops.
  • Playback. Whether this browser can play the file at all.
  • The details that matter for scrubbing: codec, resolution, frame rate, duration, size and audio.

The file stays on your device. It’s read by JavaScript in this page and never uploaded.

Next steps

If the checker suggests preparing the file, the command it shows is ready to run in your project folder. Pre-encoding with the CLI explains the options. To scrub a file as it is, vidscroll’s automatic optimization re-encodes it in each visitor’s browser instead.
